Commercial property is judged on how it looks before anybody reads a word about you. A tired planter outside a restaurant on a Friday lunchtime, a showroom floor with a dying palm in the corner, a car park hedge nobody has touched since spring. None of it is what you sell, and all of it is what people see first.
Karen has worked commercial premises around Harrogate for 28 years, and the useful part is that the same team does the inside and the outside. Most gardeners stop at the door and most interior plant firms never touch a hedge, so premises end up with two contractors, two invoices and an argument about whose job the entrance is. Here it is one visit, one schedule and one named contact.
The certification is what gets us on to the sites other gardeners cannot take on. NPTC approved, fully insured, DBS checked and IOSH certified, which is why schools, care homes, car parks and sports grounds are ordinary work rather than a special case. Tree work is done in house to BS 3998, so a dangerous limb over a beer garden does not need a second firm booking in.

Hospitality is the work Karen does most. Beer gardens, front terraces, trough planters along a pavement edge and the seating area that has to look full of colour the week the sun arrives. Planting is chosen to hold up to being walked past, sat beside and knocked, and changed twice a year so the frontage never looks tired.
Visits are normally first thing, before service, so customers never see it happening and the terrace is swept and ready before you open.
Car and furniture showrooms

A showroom floor is a difficult place to keep a plant: dry heat, low light and no one whose job it is to water it. Karen looks after showroom and dealership planting on a schedule, choosing species that actually cope with the conditions rather than ones that look right for a fortnight and then go brown at the tips.
Because the same visit covers the car park, the entrance beds and the boundary hedge, the whole site is one contractor's responsibility.

Reception is the first thing anyone walks into
Office and reception displays are watered, fed, cleaned and rotated on a regular round, with anything past its best swapped out rather than left to limp on. Planters are matched to the interior rather than dropped in from a catalogue.
It is the smallest line on most commercial schedules and the one visitors notice first.
Schools, care homes and public sites

Schools, care homes, hospitals, car parks and sports grounds all need a contractor who is DBS checked, IOSH certified and properly insured before anybody discusses planting. Karen's team holds all three, so these are ordinary bookings rather than a special arrangement.

A limb over a beer garden, a boundary line of conifers that has got away, ivy pulling at a clubhouse wall. Tree work on commercial ground is done by the same team on the same schedule, to BS 3998, NPTC qualified and fully insured, so there is no second contractor to book and no gap in liability.

How it works and what it costs
A walkover first, then a schedule you can put in a budget.
Karen comes to the site, walks it with whoever is responsible for it and writes down what actually needs doing and how often. That becomes a schedule for the year with one price against it, so the cost sits in a budget instead of arriving as a run of separate invoices you cannot predict.
Most premises settle into a fortnightly or monthly visit through the growing season and a lighter winter round, with the seasonal planting changed twice a year so the frontage does not look the same in December as it did in June. Indoor displays are usually watered and rotated on the same visit. Hedges, trees and any clearance work go in as scheduled items rather than emergencies.
There is no charge for the walkover or the written schedule, and no obligation to book. If you only want the outdoor seating replanted before the season starts, that is a perfectly good job on its own.
