The gardens on and above Waterside are the extreme version: narrow, steep, walled in places, and often reached only by steps. Bebra Gardens, the small park in the castle grounds named after Knaresborough's twin town of Bebra in Germany, is the town's own worked example of the same problem solved properly. It runs down a steep slope on meandering paths through mature trees and conifers to a paddling pool at the lowest point, with steps down to Waterside. That is the shape a Knaresborough garden wants: levels, paths that work with the slope instead of fighting it, planting that holds the bank together, and somewhere flat to actually sit.
