Hocus Crocus Gardens & Trees works as a gardener in Pateley Bridge and right through upper Nidderdale, from a base near Knaresborough, up the dale through Summerbridge. Pateley Bridge is the only town in Nidderdale, sitting on the River Nidd in the heart of the National Landscape, and the gardens here do not behave like a town garden in Harrogate. They are higher, far more exposed, and much more likely to sit on thin, acidic ground.

Gardening on an exposed Nidderdale site
Nidderdale is a landscape of windswept moorland and steep river valleys as well as rolling pasture and woodland, and that exposure is the first thing we plan around on any Pateley Bridge garden. Wind scorch on new planting, a hedge that only ever thickens on the sheltered side, a lawn that stays sodden at the bottom of a sloping plot: those are the jobs we are called out to here.
Our answer is usually shelter before show. We put a windbreak hedge or a tough shrub belt in first, let it establish, and plant the ornamental work in behind it. Ericaceous plants such as rhododendron, azalea, camellia and heather do well on the acidic gritstone soils that run through the dale, while lime-lovers sulk unless the bed is built and fed for them. We can take a soil analysis before a planting plan is drawn, and hedge cutting and reduction is booked in seasonally so a shelter hedge is cut at the right time of year rather than whenever someone is passing.

Tree work in the Nidderdale National Landscape
Pateley Bridge sits inside the Nidderdale National Landscape, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1994 and covering 60,117 hectares of upper and middle Nidderdale, part of lower Wharfedale, the Washburn valley and part of lower Wensleydale. It borders the Yorkshire Dales National Park. In plain terms, the mature trees in this dale are part of a protected landscape, they get looked at closely, and it pays to check before you cut rather than after.
Designation on its own does not stop you managing your own trees. What does bite is a Tree Preservation Order or a conservation area, where written consent or formal notice has to reach the council before any work starts. Hocus Crocus gives you guidance on what the council needs, and all tree work is carried out to BS 3998 by an NPTC approved team. The town, the villages and the show season
We cover the town itself and the settlements around it, including Bewerley, Glasshouses and Bridgehousegate. The plots behind the High Street shops are their own kind of job: narrow, walled, shaded and awkward to get machinery into. The Oldest Sweet Shop in the World has traded at 39 High Street since 1827, in a building dating from the 1600s, which gives you a fair idea of how old some of these boundary walls and yard gardens are and why we work carefully around them.
The gardening year here runs to the local calendar. The Nidderdale Show in September is traditionally the last show of the Yorkshire season, and plenty of customers want the garden looking its best going into that late-summer stretch, then cut back and put to bed before the weather turns on the tops. We book that work in advance because the window is short. Follow the dale road the other way and it comes out at Harrogate.
