Bewerley sits half a mile south of Pateley Bridge, on the other side of the Nidd, and it is a very different gardening job from the town it looks across at. The village runs up the valley side under Guisecliff, so most plots here are on a slope, on thin ground over gritstone, and a good deal more exposed than anything down in the valley bottom.
Hocus Crocus has worked the upper dale for 28 years, established 1998. Karen brings a gardener and a BS 3998 tree surgeon in the same team, which matters more the further up Nidderdale you go, because the gardens up here tend to come with mature ash, sycamore and beech that need proper attention rather than a hedge trimmer.

Tree work
The trees are the reason most people ring
Gardens on this side of the Nidd tend to come with mature ash, sycamore and beech, often close to a house, a lane or a neighbour's roof. Karen's team is NPTC qualified and works to BS 3998, so crown reduction, thinning, deadwooding, sectional felling and stump grinding are all done in house.
Ash dieback is widespread through the dale and a dead ash gets brittle and dangerous quickly, so if you have one near a building or a road it is worth a look sooner rather than later.

Planting that copes with the exposure
Thin ground over gritstone, a slope, and wind coming down off Greenhow will kill a border that was chosen from a catalogue. Karen plants shelter first, then builds the softer planting up behind it, and feeds and mulches to hold moisture in ground that drains fast.
The team are award winners in the Best Show Garden category at the Harrogate Flower Show, so the design side is not guesswork, but up here it is the plant choice that decides whether a border is still there in three years.
Through the year in Bewerley
Spring comes later up here than it does in Harrogate, often by a fortnight or more, so the first cut and the first feed are timed to the garden rather than the calendar. Hedges are cut outside nesting season. Bare root planting goes in through the dormant months, which is also when the bulk of the tree work is done, while the ground is firm enough to get a chipper onto without wrecking a lawn.
Through summer it is mowing, edges, borders and keeping on top of growth that gets away quickly after rain. Autumn is leaf clearance, cutting back and the crown work that is easier to judge once the canopy is off. Every visit ends with the arisings loaded and taken away and the paths and drive swept.
